250 Miles In The NEW INEOS Grenadier!

Take a look at my podcast, Behind The Glass (The UK's Number 1 Automotive Podcast).

From INEOS about the Grenadier:.
" The idea behind the Grenadier is to develop a 4X4 that will be an uncompromising, no frills, no difficulty vehiclethat supplies the best-in-class off-road ability, resilience and utility. It will support those who depend ona automobile as a working tool, wherever they remain in the world. INEOS Automotive set out a vision to build theworld's finest practical 4X4, and we have actually done simply that.".

The Grenadier is readily available as a five-seat Station Wagon, and aUtility Wagon with the option of a two-seat or five-seat design, depending upon market availability. The basic versions of eachmodel are a blank canvas ready to be configured for the exactneeds of consumers. They are constructed for those needing a strippedback, no-nonsense workhorse, however still with the convenience, safety, improvement and basic features that today's motorists expect.

    1. More important is to have loadspace without wheelarches getting in the way. Unfortunately that is not the case so you loose a lot of usable loadspace now.

    2. Not understanding why they put they tie down rails in the cargo zone though. Like, engineer the hooks into the pockets either side of the wheel arches. And, being recessed, those rails are going to collect all the crud.

    3. @Blue Man because you want to tie your luggage to the floor, not the sides. You need to strap it DOWN not sideways

  1. Thank you Sam! Finally a more practical/typical review. I still have my deposit on a USA rig even though no price announced. My only (minor) disappointment so far is no analog gauge set for oil pressures, temps, volts. I hate screens with an irrational passion.

    1. Really think they could have done something very cool with the gauges, taking a note from Morgan new kit on the Super 3 for example.

  2. Really did not expect to like this video so much, as the normal ones. Sooo, never miss a chance for videos like these! Especially from not so common brands.

  3. I daily drive a classic Range Rover so a car like this in theory should appeal to me. But Iโ€™m with Tony on this it just does nothing for me even with the negative connotations to Ineos and itโ€™s owner aside

  5. I always thought this would fill the gap left by the old Defender, in that it’d be a cheaper more robust workhorse than the new Defender. As much as I like the Grenadier I think the fact that it’s pretty much price matched with the new Defender may be an issue

    1. Agreed. The market has spoken. The old generation defender was a poor seller worldwide. Land Rover obviously know this and hence why we have the new defender, which has been very successful in terms of sales number. Where does it leave this offspring of an old defender and a g-wagon? I am not sure. I think itโ€™s pretty cool, but not ยฃ70,000 cool.

    2. My sentiments exactly. For someone in the bush of Australia or on safari in Africa or rock crawling in America I could see them choosing the Grenadier over the new Defender but for the majority of people the new Defender is perfectly capable of any light to moderate off roading or overlanding miles they will ever see. And for the same price you get loads more luxury, features, safety, and comfort in the new Defender. Not to mention an established dealer network for any potential gremlins that need to be addressed.

I am very torn between the two. I prefer the simplicity, looks, and traditional 4×4 components of the Grenadier and if it were in the $50k base to $60k fully loaded range it would be the obvious choice. But if it is going to be the same price as a well equipped Defender ($70k+) it is a harder decision. Especially since whichever one I get will serve as a daily driver as well.

Right now I still lean towards the Grenadier because I have wanted this exact 4×4 since they stopped selling Defenders 25 years ago in the US and I can see myself still loving it 10-20 years down the road. It is THAT 4×4 so many of us here in the US have been dreaming of for decades. I also suspect they will become instant classics and the demand will far exceed supply in the coming years making them harder and more expensive to acquire. At least I have another 12 months to figure things out. I just hope they don’t go up another $10k by the time they hit the US which could very well happen with the required safety tech they will be forced to add for MY24s and the expected inflation.

    3. Considering how many new defenders are around, there’s not much hope for this car. Worse inside and no better offroad, for the same money

  6. As a Land Rover man, I’m still intrigued by this car. It combines both the long travel coil springs of the previous Defender as well as the tall progressive bump stops of the early G Wagon. This means it should have quite a ride.

  8. Great review, Sam! You capture the unease around what is a pretty exciting new vechile perfectly. At the price, the offroad ability isn’t enough. In the UK, most people (even enthusiasts and people who genuinely need it) will be on the black stuff a significant amount of the time. Therefore, the ‘cool factor’ or use case needs to be significant to want one and live with the quirks as a daily

  11. I think that you said some things that other reviews have been reluctant to mention. Firstly, it wasn’t the manufacturers who made their vehicles ‘school run cars’ but the consumer. The new Defender, Land Cruiser 300 and Prado and the G-Wagon are all still very capable off-road vehicles. I think that people tend to forget two developments in automotive history that has lessened the need in most of the developed world for an off-road vehicle. One being the expansive network of paved roads and the other the quad bike and its variants. I grew up on a Welsh sheep hill farm and yes, when I was a child many, many moons ago, the Defender was the go to vehicle. These days, a farmer will more likely use a quad bike to get a sick/troubled sheep out of a field and not a 4×4 that churns up the ground and leaves a mess on a muddy field. The truth of the matter is, that the school run crowd are the ones that keep the development of these models on roads whether we like it or lump it. Ineos are going to find out pretty quickly that they will need to cater for this consumer too or the Grenadier will not become a viable going concern. In any case, the SUV price point of the Grenadier and its rugged looks is possibly going to appeal to the celebrity crowd as the Defender has here in Japan and it too will end up being a school run vehicle. The off-road/overlanding market is small. That alone will not generate enough sales. It is also a high-tech vehicle unlike the Land Cruiser 70 series still sold in some markets and getting parts/fixing it for it are going to be less challenging than the new Defender but more difficult than a LC 70 in many parts of the world. On top of all that, the Grenadier is unproven, has no reputation and so far, no sales – only pre-orders!

    1. +๐Ÿ’ ๐Ÿ’ ๐Ÿ• ๐Ÿ’ ๐Ÿ’ ๐Ÿ– ๐Ÿ’ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ“ ๐Ÿ• ๐Ÿ’โ™œแด›แด‡สŸแด‡ษขส€แด€แด says:

  12. Really interesting seeing this review by someone who by their own admission does not drive off road but who made it absolutely clear that the small sections that were off road in the countryside were the day’s highlight. Driving so many miles and to say he felt bonded with the vehicle is a big positive tick. The great driving position and clearly comfort being recognised. Nice one!

  13. Hi Sam, love your videos. Question: how does the grenadier ride compared to the defender? I remember the defender having an exceedingly rough ride (Bouncy)โ€ฆ Opposite of a Range Rover or a luxury car.

  14. Leaving the price on the side for a moment (and I realise that the price is a big deal), I absolutely dig this car and I would be happier driving and towing with it, I am sure, than with a GLE, a X5 or a Q7

  15. Great video – thanks for sharing.

As someone who’s seriously in the market for one of these right now, the biggest problem is that there’s a complete lack of information in relation to when they’ll actually be available

I put my deposit down on the day reservations opened…. but then cancelled it about 12 months later when there was zero information available – and due to a change in personal circumstances.

Circumstances have changed again – and I really want one – but black hole of information is not helpful.

If the wait is 6 months I’m happy to wait and give my money to Ineos. If its 18 months, I’ll be forced to go elsewhere.
