Escape hatch is there mostly as a way out in case the vehicle ends on its side…which is not rare given all that weight so high up. Have myself spent many uncomfortable days in UN armoured Toyota LCs and I tell you, the slightest inclination in the road makes it super difficult – just impossible, at steeper angles – to use any of the doors.
Too bad the hatch can’t be opened while underwater, since it opens outwards.
@Mazda Miata Having watched a flooded car escape vid the answer for this is rolling the window down if it gets underwater.
Even if it doesn’t have the old school manual roll down windows the electronics still work for a while when flooded or underwater.
*Edit: It has the manual roll down windows, looks like that was thought out.
