  1. Gotta love Doug. Makes a video about achieving his lifetime dream and then it’s back to business as usual. One of the few successful YouTubers to always remain humble.

    1. Well I would hope making videos for our entertainment is his purpose and truly makes him happy. Buying some car isn’t enough to fulfill your life’s purpose or happiness

  2. Surprised the 959 didn’t make this list. I don’t think it’s obscure to car people, especially when you know about its link to the Show and Display rule.

    1. I seem to recall that for the North American marketplace, the 959 actually detuned, so that it wouldn’t reach its theoretical top speed, but to also meet some safety or insurance requirements…

    2. @Ian Davis I don’t remember the 959 even making it to the NA marketplace (or at least not to the *United* *States* marketplace). Supposedly, the Porsche CEO said, “Americanization would destroy that car,” so no attempt at federalization was made.

    3. @Ian Davis It was never sold in America. But it was desired by people like Bill Gates who worked to get Show and Display passed as a work around to bring it to the US.

  3. I would’ve included Porsche 911 Turbo, and probably Lotus Esprit Turbo, excluding pseudocars like the Vector W8, and some other cars

    1. The Esprit suffers from being a bit obscure in the US. I think there is an argument that later models that are vastly better can remove a car from the list. To that end, the 90’s 930 911 likely takes that cake. My shock on the list is the missing 89 Miata.

  4. I always like the Ford Cosworth RS Sierra. Its a super cool 80s performance car that everyone has forgotten about for some reason which is surprising considering that if you wanted to win a touring car championship anywhere in the mid to late 80s, it was the car you had to have.

    1. @dave smith The Lima is a little different 🙂 You can not just put the cosworth head on it, but some 16v Volvo head fits with very little modification.

YB based on the early Pinto 2.0 motor (and that was used in European: Escort (rwd Mk1 and Mk2), Capri, Taunus, Cortina, Granada, Transit (Sierra, Scorpio and some other non Ford cars) ~~ there were a lot of them 1.3/1.6/1.8/ 2.0 SOHC), from 1970 up to 1994 (Cosworth up to 96)

2.3 lima was based on the same architecture but had bigger pistons (96 mm – the 2.0 sohc euro had just under 91 mm), lima had hydraulic lifters (the euro engines were manual valve adjustment) and lima in stock form made same horsepower as the euro 1.6 GT 😀 88 HP 😀 the head of the lima is different with 4 camshaft bearings, the euro sohc had only 3 …. lima was first introduced in 1974 for the Pinto and the Mustang II – so it’s a little bit later to the market.

    2. @Ammar Israr The Renault 5 was actually sold in the US, as the Renault Le Car (terrible name btw). We didn’t get any of the cool hot hatch versions or homologation specials though, just the 1.3L I4 with 50 ish HP.

    3. Doug, you put the E30 M3 on here but failed to include it’s main rival, the Mercedes Benz 190E-16, even in post list. From what I remember, that was an epic car.

  5. Although it epitomises the 80s, the Countach is in fact a 70s car, even in flares and wings form. I am not arguing it shouldn’t be on the list, culturally it is the king of the decade, but it is a very different car to the early 70s narrowbody periscope OG Countach. The M1 and 308 are 70s cars, as is the Golf GTI (the 205 is purely an 80s car). The 959 really should have been on this list. The Paris-Dakar rally made it iconic. Imagine wrapping a street version in Rothmans livery… The Testarossa is also an emblematic 80s car, made famous in Miami Vice, Test Drive and Outrun and should have made the list. The Renault 5 turbo, RS Cosworth and RS200, the 944 (the 924, 930 and 928 were 70s cars), the M635i, the Maserati Biturbo, the Corvette C4, the 037 Stradale and Lotus Turbo Esprit (N/A Esprits are very 70s. The Turbo IS the 80s) should also have made the list. Not to mention the DeLorean, the Aston Martin Virage and, for 80s kids who grew up watching Knight Rider, the 3rd generation Pontiac Trans-Am, for its looks alone.

  6. The Testatossa was really the ultimate 80s car. Wild styling, actually came out in the 80s (unlike the Countach), big V12, great historic name. I love the 288 and the F40, but neither really scream “1980s!” like the Testarossa did.

  7. It’s great to see the name of my beloved hometown PRAHA (Prague) on Doug’s T-shirt ❤️ I’ve thought he wears just T-shirts with cars 😀 I wish one day Doug will come to Czechia and make a review of Skoda or the supercar Praga.

    2. Many times I was thinking, what car should Doug review in the Czech republic, it would be great if he would come, so this t-shirt surprised me. As far as I know, he doesn’t have a video from Czechia, or Europe, with some special cars, or does he?

  8. I get that the 959 is not on the list, but the 911 Turbo of the 80s (930 series with the iconic 3.3l Turbo flat-six) is THE ultimate and most iconic Porsche of the 80s and definetly would deserve a spot on this list (and probably a very high ranking spot).

    1. And the 928S series.
Dude the 1st 7 cars on this list are my grandmothers top performance cars of the 1980’s.
      This list is a travesty

    2. Yeah the 959 certainly should have been on the list and in the top 3. It’s not my list and even though I do love me a good hot hatch, did we need two slots taken up by them? Also the Z1, just no. I’m actually a BMW fanboy. I’ve got a 1994 325is and a 2003 330XI sitting outside now, but all the Z1 has going for it really is the odd doors. I can’t see picking it over a 959.

    3. But as the title says: “My favorite performance cars of the 1980’s”. If it didn’t make the list, it wasn’t one of Doug’s favorites.

    4. Unless you are a big porche-head, 911s don’t seem particularly 80s. They are just kind of… continuous…

Like, they probably deserve to be on the list of 12 most iconic cars of the last 50 years – but not so much a particular decade.

  9. Lol Doug’s the guy who would also forget the 80’s Chevy Camaro Z28 and the Pontiac firebird transAm ☺️🙌🏿 but I guess since you had a list of only 12 ,we can give you a pass!

  10. If I could choose to have one special supercar from the 80s I’d take a Cizeta V16T. Canepa restored one pretty well and what could be better than quad pop-up headlights and 16 cylinders 😀
